Battery Storage & Solar ESS Design

Battery projects are rarely just a battery added to a solar drawing. Backup boundaries, existing service equipment, inverter architecture, power-control settings, generators, multiple panels, and equipment-specific requirements all affect how the system should be documented.

Gemini Solar Design develops coordinated permit drawings for solar-plus-storage, storage retrofits, whole-home backup, partial-home backup, and complicated residential or commercial ESS configurations. You work directly with the designer evaluating the electrical architecture.

Equipment-specific design matters

Different manufacturers solve backup, isolation, current control, and communications in different ways. A coordinated design must reflect the actual product family and model rather than relying on a generic battery symbol.

Gemini has project experience involving Enphase, FranklinWH, EG4 GridBOSS and FlexBOSS, Sol-Ark, Tesla Powerwall, Generac, Victron, and related PV and service equipment. Each project is still checked against the selected equipment documentation and the information supplied for the site.

What the drawings may address

A battery or ESS package may document the service and distribution arrangement, backed-up and non-backed-up loads, batteries, inverters, gateways or control equipment, disconnecting means, overcurrent protection, conductor and conduit information, equipment locations, operating notes, rapid shutdown, labels, schedules, and supporting specification sheets.

Projects with multiple buildings, long feeder runs, service upgrades, unusual grounding, generators, or several energy sources require added coordination. Those conditions should be identified early so the drawing set reflects the real installation concept.

Information to send

Start with the property address, utility, proposed modules and storage equipment, inverter or microinverter models, existing service rating, main-panel and subpanel information, the loads intended for backup, generator information if applicable, equipment-location photos or sketches, and any existing plans.

If a final equipment schedule has not been selected, explain the design goal and list the products being considered. Gemini can identify the decisions and documentation needed before the plan set is developed.

Design, revision, and engineering coordination

After the scope is confirmed, Gemini develops the project drawings and communicates directly about missing or conflicting information. AHJ corrections, utility comments, customer changes, and equipment substitutions can be addressed as the project moves forward.

When professional engineering review, calculations, or stamps are required, Gemini can secure and coordinate electrical or structural PE services through appropriately registered engineers.

Need an off-grid system instead?
